Report: Odell Beckham Jr. considering $100 million insurance policy

Odell Beckham Jr. Giants

While he seems to have avoided major damage, a hit to the knee of Odell Beckham Jr. on Monday served as a sobering reminder of just how quickly someone’s value can be diminished. Because of that, Beckham has reportedly considered taking out a massive insurance policy if the extension isn’t reached.

“New York Giants star Odell Beckham Jr. will consider acquiring a massive insurance policy – possibly for more than $100 million in injury protection – if he doesn’t reach a contract extension with the team before the NFL‘s regular season begins, two sources close to Beckham told Yahoo Sports,” Chris Robinson of Yahoo Sports reported. “The sources said Beckham’s camp explored injury insurance prior to Monday night, when a scary hit left the player with a sprained ankle in a preseason game against the Cleveland Browns.”

While that’s a humongous policy, it’s hard to say that it wouldn’t be smart. Beckham is one of the game’s best receivers and most marketable players. He has immense value. But in the NFL, that value can be diminished (if not eliminated) in the span of about one-half second.

Beckham has certainly gotten mixed signals from the Giants. While owner John Mara has said clearly that Beckham should be paid, he’s also made it clear that it’s not the team’s top priority.

Robinson also cited a source, saying that “a new deal is preferable to adding insurance.” It’s hard to argue with that, especially if Beckham can become the league’s highest-paid player. But the insurance policy isn’t a bad backup plan.
