Report: John Harbaugh, Ozzie Newsome blocked by owner from signing Colin Kaepernick

NFL free agents, Colin Kaepernick

The Baltimore Ravens, desperate for help at the quarterback position, have talked about bringing in Colin Kaepernick but have not done so.

ESPN’s Dianna Russini reports both head coach John Harbaugh and general manager Ozzie Newsome want to sign Kaepernick. There’s just one problem. Owner Steve Bisciotti is reportedly blocking the move.

Bisciotti recently said he’s been talking to fans, sponsors and others about the prospect of potentially signing Kaepernick, who is a polarizing figure. Because of his political and social views, Kaepernick is a player who’s become bigger than the game in the eyes of many. As such, he’s been viewed as a player who could be more distraction than help.

It’s been reported that the Ravens are not going to sign Kaepernick at this time following Bisciotti’s discussions with the people he reached out to. Instead, the Ravens have been bringing in the likes of David Olson and Josh Woodrum, who haven’t the abilities needed to play at the NFL level.

Backup Ryan Mallett has been awful leading the first-team absence as Joe Flacco recovers from a back injury that hit out of the blue recently. Harbaugh believes Flacco will be back some time this preseason, and he better be. Because if the Ravens head into the season with Mallett behind center they’re going to lose.
