Report: Jaguars QB job Chad Henne’s to lose

Chad Henne

Less than a week after Blake Bortles stunk up the joint against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Chad Henne is reportedly the favorite to start. Chris Mortensen, speaking on ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown,” said he’s heard that there is a growing sense the job is Henne’s to lose.

Looking at just how badly Bortles has regressed of late, this is hardly shocking. He missed Allen Robinson multiple times when he was wide open for huge plays against the Bucs. He has also reportedly struggled with decision making and accuracy throughout training camp.

Heck, just looking back at his three-year career to this point, Bortles hasn’t done anything besides throw 35 touchdowns (a lot of those in garbage time) in 2015. He’s compiled a record of 11-34 since being drafted No. 3 overall in 2014. He has completed just 58.8 percent of his passes as a pro, throwing 51 interceptions in 46 games.

Henne is no prize. In his journeyman career, he’s compiled a record of 18-25, completing 59.3 percent of his passes with 58 touchdowns and 63 interceptions in 65 games.

But the bottom line here is that Bortles just needs to be put on the shelf. Either he needs to be on the bench or cut altogether. If he’s hurt, the Jags could be on the hook for $19 million in 2018 after they picked up his fifth-year option. All that money is guaranteed for injury.

Henne and Bortles have reportedly been splitting first-string reps in practice since Sunday. Henne has been much more effective through two preseason games. At this point, it seems like a foregone conclusion he’ll be the man behind center when the Jaguars open their season on Sunday, Sept. 10 on the road in Houston against the Texans.
