Report: Eagles release former Pro Bowl RB Ryan Mathews

Just a short while after being medically cleared to return to the field following neck surgery, veteran running back Ryan Mathews has reportedly been released by the Philadelphia Eagles.

This has always likely been the end result for the two sides. Philadelphia signed veteran LeGarrette Blount and still employs Darren Sproles. Add in youngsters Wendell Smallwood and Donnel Pumphrey, and the writing has been on the wall for some time here.

Mathews, 30, led the Eagles with 661 rushing yards last season. A former Pro Bowler with the then San Diego Chargers, it remains to be seen whether the injury-plagued running back will catch on with another team. Off-season neck surgery obviously doesn’t help his cause a lot here.
