The Minnesota Vikings have activated running back Latavius Murray from the PUP list, clearing him to practice with the team for the first time. This roster move was announced by the team on Monday, just a few days ahead of their first preseason game against the Buffalo Bills.
Murray was signed as a free agent this offseason. He played his first three seasons with the Oakland Raiders, earning a starting role in 2015. He rushed for 1,854 yards and 18 touchdowns the past two seasons in Oakland and should carve out a significant role within Minnesota’s offense.
However, at this time it seems rookie Dalvin Cook is well ahead of Murray for the bulk of the work to start the season. He’s been earning rave reviews from his teammates and beat writers who cover the team. One of those writers suggested recently that Cook will start and that Murray will be the team’s short-yardage, goal-line specialist.
Regardless of how it all plays out, the Vikings must be thrilled to finally get Murray into action. He’s been unable to practice since being signed after undergoing offseason ankle surgery. No doubt, they’ll bring him along slowly to ensure he doesn’t suffer a setback.
