GoFundMe raises over $100K for seven-year-old Cubs fan battling rare brain tumor

DIPG

A seven-year-old boy and rabid Chicago Cubs fan, Joey, is battling a rare and aggressive form of brain tumor known as DIPG (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma).

His family has set up a GoFundMe to help cover the cost of his treatment. Following his diagnosis last year at the age of six, treatments helped the tumor recede gradually. He’s also played baseball and staunchly rooted for his favorite team throughout it all.

However, he’s recently suffered a setback, and the only real recourse is experimental treatments.

As we’ve seen so often, the experimental treatments needed to combat this tumor are exceedingly expensive and not covered by insurance or government funded.

“The treatment in Mexico is quite involved. It requires long stays and multiple visits. Each treatment is roughly $30,000, which does not include flights, housing, food, and any other expenses that may occur. Estimates from some families that are currently in the trial are around $300,000 total.”

Since the GoFundMe was set up 10 months ago, generous donors have given over $105,000 to help fund the medical expenses. However, that’s a far cry from the $400,000 the family is hoping to raise to ensure he gets the treatment he needs to beat DIPG.

We’re rooting for Joey and his family and wish them nothing but happiness and a full recovery in due time.
