New York Giants’ wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. could miss the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys after suffering an ankle injury on Monday night.

“It’s not out of the question he could miss a week or two of the regular season, according to one source,” ESPN’s Jordan Raanan and Graziano reported Tuesday night.

Though Beckham left the game against the Cleveland Browns, the injury was initially reported to be a mere ankle sprain, which was confirmed by an MRI. However, it is unclear whether that was a low or high-ankle sprain. Beckham is also likely to miss the last two preseason games, according to ESPN.

This is potentially a huge blow to New York’s chances in Dallas. The Giants had been given a leg up in that opening game after the six-game suspension of Cowboys’ running back Ezekiel Elliott. However, in losing Beckham, the team will potentially be without its top receiver. That loss is especially big against a Dallas team whose secondary is a big question mark coming into the season.

Though the Giants also have Brandon Marshall, Sterling Shepard and rookie tight end Evan Engram in their receiving corps, Beckham is a step above all of those players. After beating Dallas twice last season, a Week 1 loss would be a huge setback to New York’s hopes of winning the NFC East.

The report also indicates that Beckham could perhaps miss Week 2, though that seems a more remote possibility at this point.

This injury will certainly be one to watch over the coming weeks.
