A grand jury decided not to charge Oakland Raiders rookie Gareon Conley for sexual assault on Monday, clearing his name in the eyes of the law.

It was a verdict that was a long time coming for the former Ohio State star cornerback. News broke about the allegations back in April, just before the 2017 NFL Draft. The allegations hurt Conley’s draft stock in no small way, and the Raiders were seen to be taking a significant risk when they selected him No. 24 overall.

Not surprisingly, Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie was all smiles after the grand jury opted not to charge his first-round prize on Monday. Then on Tuesday, Conley himself issued a statement.

In it, Conley said he is “thankful that this burden has been lifted” as he enters training camp with his new team. He also thanked the City of Cleveland and the Cleveland police for “reaching a conclusion based on the facts, not speculation.”

Conley also called the accusations against him, “malicious and false” while admitting he could have used “better judgement.”

Below is the entire statement, issued by Conley via his Twitter account.

Conley opened Raiders training camp on the PUP list, though he’s listed as day-to-day with shin splints.
