Former Rams head coach on team hiring Sean McVay: ‘Wait a minute while I puke’

Former Rams head coach Mike Martz is not inspired by Sean McVay's hire.

Former St. Louis Rams head coach Mike Martz has not been in the NFL since 2011. Since he left the Rams over a decade ago, Martz’s NFL career has gone downhill. He struggled in stops as an offensive coordinator in San Francisco, Detroit and Chicago.

This has not stopped Martz from speaking out about his former Rams team and how, at least in his mind, the team dropped the ball by hiring Sean McVay to be its new head coach.

“What is he (McVay), a couple of months older than Jared (Goff)? They hired a buddy for Jared,” Martz said in a new book published recently. “The NFL has nothing to do with being the friend or the buddy of the quarterback. You’ve got to coach them and work them hard with respect. But buddy? And this guy is a quarterback expert? An offensive expert? Wait a minute while I puke.”

Martz was specifically talking about how Goff was put in a horrible situation with the now Los Angeles Rams as a rookie last season. As head coach for the “Greatest Show on Turf” years back, Martz seems to know what he’s talking about when it comes to the quarterback position. He’s most definitely not happy with the way the Rams’ old coaching staff handled Goff and his struggles as a rookie last season.

“I watched the Rams offense last season. It was awful football. There was nobody there on that staff that could teach him, develop him,” Martz said. “You have a high-value guy like that and he went to the worst offensive place, the Rams.”

As you can tell by now, Martz did not hold back from attacking his old organization. The former coaching staff was not immune to criticism. And most definitely, McVay himself wasn’t.

“Right, he’s (McVay) going to be able to teach and handle and guide Jared through tough times because of all of his expertise and knowledge? Right,” Martz continued. “I’m not going to drink that Kool-Aid.”

McVay was hired by the Rams back in January. Then 30, he became the youngest head coach in the history of the National Football League. And in reality, it seems Martz has taken exception to that idea.
