Dikembe Mutombo, who spent his final years as an NBA player with the Houston Rockets, is helping to put together a group to buy the franchise. He’s been voicing interest in this prospect since owner Leslie Alexander shocked the Association by announcing he was putting the franchise up for sale. Now he’s closer than ever before to making that dream a reality.

In an interview with Adi Joseph of For The Win, Mutombo revealed things are coming together nicely on this front.

“I’m putting together a group to buy the Houston Rockets, and we’re getting close,” he said. “Getting close in the next couple weeks, maybe I’ll have a chance. Lot of people, lot of people and good people with a lot of money.”

Mutombo isn’t the only big-time celebrity who’s been reported as having interest in purchasing a minority stake in the team. Pop star Beyonce has also been mentioned as a potential part-owner, though neither she nor her representatives have confirmed this interest.

Any group that comes through with the winning bid will be offering a king’s ransom. Scott Shoshnick of Bloomberg reported a few weeks back that the final sale will likely exceed $2 billion.
