David Johnson: Netflix feast prompted dietary adjustments

Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson has changed his diet after watching a Netflix series.

Right off the bat, you may be thinking that Johnson had to trim down after munching on potato chips as a couch potato while binge-watching Netflix.

Not exactly.

In July, Johnson and his wife Meghan started following a plant-based diet after watching Netflix documentaries on food.

Johnson commented on his transition to the new diet, which he says wasn’t too difficult.

“It wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be,” Johnson said, per Josh Weinfuss of ESPN. “I thought it would definitely be hard just because, as Americans, we’re taught to eat a whole bunch of meat. It’s not even just eating meat, it’s the portions. What I’ve learned is that we’re taught eating like 24 ounces of steak is a manly thing, when really you’re only supposed to eat 8 to 10 as a portion.”

Johnson and his wife watched “What the Health” and “Forks Over Knives,” which prompted them to redirect their eating habits.

Johnson has not cut meat completely out of his diet however. He said he had to add back in small portions of meat after starting training camp at 223 pounds. After all, Johnson needs a little extra bulk to be productive against defenders.

Johnson is following the trend of some players, including five-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, who strictly adheres to eating hand-created, plant-based meals.

It is obviously working wonders for Brady, who feels amazing at 40. Johnson, who was one of the most productive running backs in the league last year, only stands to better his efforts due to his dietary change. The diet already seems to be doing wonders for his physique (watch).

Last year, the dual-threat back tallied 2,118 all-purpose yards and 20 touchdowns.

Bonappetite!
