Dahntay Jones played 14 years in the NBA. He earned an NBA title with the Cleveland Cavaliers back in 2016. The Duke product also averaged all of 5.4 points throughout his career.
Despite this, Jones felt compelled to speak up recently about the status of a true NBA star, Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry.
And it wasn’t kind.
“People get mad at me, because I don’t declare (Curry) a top-10 player in the NBA, which is fine,” Jones told Barstool Sports’ Mickstape Show. “I’ve got him on the outside – like 11, 12.”
A two-time NBA champion, Curry has appeared in each of the past three NBA Finals and has earned two MVP awards during that span. He’s also well on his way to becoming the greatest shooter in NBA history.
But sure, he’s most definitely not a top-10 player in today’s NBA.
If Jones wasn’t so salty about his Cavs losing to the Warriors in June’s Finals, there’s an argument that could be had that Curry is a tad overrated. He’s just not the one to make said argument.
Curry rarely guards the other team’s best perimeter player. That responsibility falls on the shoulders of Klay Thompson, who is among the top defensive players in the game. So, if we were talking two-way players in today’s NBA, Curry himself likely wouldn’t be rated incredibly high.
Even then, what Curry has done to redefine the NBA surely makes him one of the game’s best players. Just don’t tell that to Dahntay Jones.
