Browns name Brock Osweiler starter for second preseason game

Cleveland Browns QB Brock Osweiler wants to be the team's starter in 2017.

The Cleveland Browns’ coaching stuff apparently didn’t put much stock in what it saw during the team’s preseason opener against the New Orleans Saints last week.

In talking to the media on Wednesday, Browns head coach Hue Jackson indicated that veteran Brock Osweiler will start against the New York Giants on Monday night.

Osweiler, who was acquired in a salary dump from the Houston Texans back in March, completed just 6-of-14 passes for 42 yards in his Browns preseason debut. He was about as erratic as they come from an accuracy standpoint. Despite this, a certain Browns coach decided to loft praise Brock’s way following the game.

Meanwhile, rookie second-round pick DeShone Kizer was absolutely brilliant in his NFL preseason debut. The Notre Dame product completed 11-of-18 passes for 184 yards, including a game-winning touchdown with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.

The good news here for those who want to see Kizer given a chance is that he’s going to play before second-year signal caller Cody Kessler. If nothing else that could lead us to believe Kizer himself is prepared to challenge Osweiler for the starting job heading into the regular season. Monday’s game against the Giants will tell us a lot about where the potential quarterback competition is heading.
