Bob Stoops open to joining College Football Playoff committee

Bob Stoops retired from his longtime position as Oklahoma’s head coach during the offseason, but his future might include another prestigious job.

In an interview with ESPN’s Heather Dinich, Stoops said “it’d sure be worth listening” if approached about joining the 13-person College Football Playoff selection committee.

Dinich notes the CFP committee, which at this point has not contacted Stoops, will announce six new members in January 2018.

Stoops, who stepped down in June and is now a special assistant at the school, is indirectly familiar with the process.

Oklahoma finished the 2015 regular season at 11-1 and made the Playoff, but the Sooners missed the four-team championship tournament with a 10-2 record last year. Both choices, for example, were the right decision, and that has led to a positive view from Stoops’ angle.

“I think they’re doing a good job,” he said. “I don’t think it’s ever going to be perfect, but I do believe it’s better than just two teams. I really believe the quality of people and how hard they’re working with it, they’re doing a great job with the selection committee and the effort and time, and all they’re putting into it. Four is better than two.”

Stoops would provide another valued perspective in the room, which already includes a few former coaches. Those are Frank Beamer (Virginia Tech), Jeff Bower (Southern Miss), Herb Deromedi (Central Michigan), Bobby Johnson (Vanderbilt) and Tyrone Willingham (Notre Dame, Stanford).

Considering the backgrounds of past and former committee members, the candidate pool is likely to be diverse. But at least for one spot, Stoops would be an excellent choice as a highly respected former coach.
