Entire rows of tickets still available for MLB All-Star Game

Through the years, the MLB All-Star Game has been consistently able to draw a strong attendance figure. But two days before 2017’s Midsummer Classic, the game has not sold out.

In fact, as Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports noted, in certain parts of Marlins Park, eight seats can be had together.

A few factors are certainly in play here.

One, while the All-Star Game gives fans a chance to see the game’s best players, $280 for an upper deck seat well down the first base line is a steep cost. That’s only multiplied for those bringing a family.

Also, the Miami Marlins have one of baseball’s worst attendance figures. Only the Oakland Athletics and Tampa Bay Rays draw fewer fans per game. While fans from everywhere come to see the All-Star Game, the crowds are still largely local.

Finally, while Miami is a good tourism city, it’s also one of MLB’s more isolated locations. Only two other franchises play in the Southeast. For most out of town fans, getting to South Florida is something of a trip.

Whatever the reasons, it’s definitely not something MLB wants to see. The All-Star Game is one of the league’s showcase events. Significant numbers of empty seats is a nightmare scenario.
