Ron Rivera: Cam Newton shoulder ‘fine,’ throwing to teammates

Cam Newton Carolina Panthers NFL

How well is Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton recovering from offseason shoulder surgery? Evidently, things are going okay.

Coach Ron Rivera told David Newton of ESPN that “Newton is in Baltimore throwing with teammates,” adding that “apparently his shoulder is fine.”

Newton — the 2015 NFL MVP — underwent rotator cuff surgery on his right (throwing) shoulder at the end of March. Thus far, the recover process has gone smoothly. While Newton didn’t throw in minicamp, he has thrown since and has always been expected to be back for training camp, which opens on July 26.

The Panthers will then open the preseason on August 9 against the Houston Texans, with the regular season beginning on September 10 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Obviously, a healthy Newton will be vital to the success of the Panthers as they try to regain the form from 2015 when they went 15-1 and went to the Super Bowl.
