Report: Teams calling Blue Jays about Jose Bautista

MLB teams, Jose Bautista

The Toronto Blue Jays find themselves seven games under .500 and in last place in the American League East. It’s been a sorely disappointing season for a squad that won 89 games and earned a trip to the ALCS last season.

Despite this, Toronto has not shown itself to be sellers heading up to the trade deadline late this month. Maybe the team is holding out hope that it can rebound from a season-long slump. Such hope is false and should be met with skepticism. Simply put, Toronto doesn’t have the talent to compete with the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees back east.

If Toronto decided to blow this whole thing up, other teams are reportedly interested in acquiring 36-year-old outfielder Jose Bautista.

As you can see above, Bautista has struggled a great deal this season. He’s hitting .227 with 16 homers and 43 RBI while boasting a .340 on-base percentage.

This comes mere months after the Jays re-signed Bautista to a one-year, $18.5 million contract. While that seems to be a high price to pay for a rundown veteran, having no commitment beyond the 2017 season could be of interest to contending teams.

It just remains to be seen whether Toronto will be selling off any of its big assets. Should that happen, an aging Bautista would likely be the first one to go.
