Report: Steelers offered Le’Veon Bell $12-plus million per season

Le'Veon Bell

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a strong offer to Pro Bowl running back Le’Veon Bell leading up to Monday’s deadline to sign him to an extension. According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, the offer called for north of $12 million annually on what would have been a five-year deal.

Instead of deciding to give himself some long-term security, Bell opted to play under the $12.1 million franchise tag for the 2017 season. Though, that’s all dependent on Bell actually signing the franchise tag tender that was placed on him back in February. At this point, suggestions are that Bell will be a hold out into training camp this summer.

Bell, 25, put up nearly 1,900 total yards with nine touchdowns in just 12 games last season. Issues surrounding a three-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy has complicated negotiations further. It will surely be interesting to see how Bell plays this. However, an extended hold out doesn’t seem to be in the cards.
