Report: Ravens won’t sign Colin Kaepernick ‘at this time’

Colin Kaepernick

With Joe Flacco hurt and Ryan Mallett struggling, the Baltimore Ravens had been discussing the possibility of signing Colin Kaepernick. It now appears as though that will not happen.

Speaking ESPN’s “NFL Live,” Diana Russini detailed that while conversations are ongoing, the current thinking is that Baltimore will pass on the controversial quarterback.

“They are having a difficult time trying to figure out what to do because they are listening to both sides,” Russini said. “As of right now, though, they have made the decision not to sign Colin Kaepernick.”

Russini also detailed that the Ravens are passing on Robert Griffin III, who was also discussed as an option.

Opinions on both sides of the Kaepernick argument are strong.

Like it or not, Kaepernick is controversial. Any team that signs him will at least risk alienating part of its fan base. That doesn’t mean that a team shouldn’t sign him. But it does mean that if there’s any significant doubt, that team probably won’t.

Especially if he’s going to be competing for a starting job (as Kaepernick would until Flacco returned), any team that signs him needs to be 100-percent behind him. That doesn’t mean supporting his stance, but that team that signs Kaepernick can’t show so much public doubt that it’s the right thing to do.

The Ravens obviously couldn’t reach that point.
