Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh has reportedly bolstered his talent evaluation department by hiring former San Francisco 49ers executive Tom Gamble.
Tim Kawakami of The Athletic reported this news, which has yet to be confirmed by the school’s athletic department.
Word out of Ann Arbor is that former 49ers personnel exec Tom Gamble is joining Jim Harbaugh's Michigan staff…

Gamble and Harbaugh worked together during the coach’s tenure as head coach of the 49ers. During that time, Gamble served as the director of player personnel and the director of pro personnel, working under then general manager Trent Baalke. He also has served as the vice president of player personnel with the Philadelphia Eagles and has decades of experience evaluating talent at the professional level as a scout and executive.
Most recently, after being brought back as the assistant general manager to Baalke in 2015 Gamble was dismissed by San Francisco as part of the sweeping changes that occurred this offseason.
Nick Baumgardner of MLive.com notes that Harbaugh has filled all 10 of his coaching positions. This means that Gamble is presumably being brought on board to help Harbaugh in his recruiting efforts and to evaluate talent within the program.
