Report: Clippers engaging Grizzlies in sign-and-trade for Tony Allen

Tony Allen

The Los Angeles Clippers are reportedly looking to add a little grind to their team. With the loss of wing players J.J. Redick and Jamal Crawford, the Clippers are reportedly in talks with the Memphis Grizzlies about acquiring Tony Allen.

This would actually be a much different look for Los Angeles.

While they play similar positions, Allen is dramatically different from Redick and Crawford. Redick and Crawford are offense first players that generally need to be shielded on the defensive end of the floor. Allen is the polar opposite.

A 2015 playoff series between Memphis and the Golden State Warriors tilted Golden State’s way when the Warriors decided to guard Allen with big man Andrew Bogut, but actually left him open for most of the time. He will certainly not help Los Angeles outscore Golden State.

He can, however, do a lot to help the Clippers limit the Warriors’ explosiveness. Allen is a terrific wing defender and is not at all lost when guarding the likes of the smaller Stephen Curry or bigger Kevin Durant.
