Obi Melifonwo: Raiders can stop Chiefs from winning AFC West

Obi Melifonwu Oakland Raiders practice

Last season saw something happen for the Oakland Raiders that had not happened since 2002. They made the postseason. Had they not lost Derek Carr to a serious injury late in the year, who knows what could have happened. But they got over the hump. They finally made it back to the playoffs.

It may seem crazy that a team with a 12-4 record had to make it in as a wild card when two AFC division winners had lesser records. The reason for this, of course, is that the Kansas City Chiefs (also 12-4) won the tiebreaker since they beat the Raiders in both head-to-head matchups.

So division honors went to the Chiefs. If the Raiders are going to take the division this coming season, they will have to take down the Chiefs. Rookie defensive back Obi Melifonwo said during an appearance on the NFL Network Monday he believes the team will get it done this year.

“I think so,” Melifonwu said (h/t Pro Football Talk). “Like I said, with all the guys we have this year, with everybody that’s coming back and with everybody we’ve added, our coaching staff and everybody that’s been really for the cause I think we can stop them. Actually, I know we can stop them.”

The Chiefs gained 729 yards and scored 47 points against the Raiders in both contests last season. If the Raiders are going to beat the Chiefs this season, they are going to have their work cut out for them.
