According to a report by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, five teams have contacted Whitehead following his release by the Dallas Cowboys on Monday.

The Cowboys released Whitehead after an arrest warrant had been issued. It turned out that Whitehead was involved in a case of mistaken identity and shoplifting charges have since been dropped.

Per the report, another team has until 4:00 pm ET on Wednesday to claim Whitehead off the waivers.

As for Whitehead, he was disappointed that the Cowboys did not support him and said feels betrayed after being called a liar. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stood by the team’s decision to release Whitehead, citing a “culmination of things” led to the release, per the report.

Whitehead told NFL Network’s Cole Wright the following during an interview on Tuesday.

“I just wanted some time to clear my name,” Whitehead told NFL Network’s Cole Wright in a phone interview on Tuesday’s NFL Total Access on NFL Network. “I think I deserve that a little bit … It was just unfortunate how it all happened. I wish I got a chance to clear my name up.

“As far as the Cowboys organization, I appreciate them, for giving me the opportunity to be where I’m at today,” Whitehead said. “Hopefully I can find me a new home and start over.”

The fact that five teams have already expressed their interest means Whitehead might soon be on his way to that new home he clearly desires. He spent two seasons in Dallas working on special teams as a punt and kick returner. He tallied 1,404 all purpose yards over 30 games.
