Jerry Jones says Luke McCown was a ‘better fit’ than Colin Kaepernick

Jerry Jones

The Dallas Cowboys signed veteran journeyman Luke McCown on Friday night. The 36-year-old quarterback will take over as the team’s No. 3 signal caller behind Dak Prescott and Kellen Moore.

McCown was out of football all of last season and has thrown a grand total of 40 passes since the end of the 2011 campaign. Interestingly enough, that was Colin Kaepernick’s rookie season with the San Francisco 49ers.

Why are the two tied together? Well, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones decided it made sense to state that McCown himself was a better fit for the No. 3 job over Kaepernick.

We’re not too sure what the context of that quote was. Maybe Jones was asked specifically about Kaepernick, who has drawn interest from the Baltimore Ravens recently.

Some may conclude this is an absolutely absurd statement. But we have to look at it in the context of being a scout-team quarterback. Coming off a 2016 campaign that saw him put up 18 total touchdowns and just four interceptions, that’s unlikely a role Kaepernick would want to fill.

At the very least, if a team were to sign the embattled veteran, it would be for a primary backup job. Jones seems to understand this.
