Former coach: J.J. Watt looks ‘phenomenal’

J.J. Watt

For the first time in his career, Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt was sidelined after he missed 13 games in 2016. He has since returned to the practice field and “feels great” after undergoing back surgery.

According to Watt’s former coach Randall McCray, the four-time All-Pro recently looked amazing at practice.

“I can’t speak on his behalf, but he looked phenomenal that day, McCray noted via Joseph Duarte of chron.com. He works like a man on a mission.”

McCray coached Watt at Wisconsin. He is the current defensive coordinator and assistant coach at Texas State. McCray has kept in touch with Watt over the years, per the report.

If anyone is able to evaluate Watt’s health status and on-field performances, it would be McCray. The Texans getting their star defender back this season is a huge deal. He will only improve a defense that ranked No. 1 without him for 13 weeks.

Watt has led the league in sacks twice during six-year career, having tallied 20.5 in 2012 and 17.5 in 2015.

This positive update on Watt is just one more in a line of many we’ve heard about this offseason. The Texans star should soon return to his status as one of the most terrifying pass rushers in the league.
