Colts waive Ken Griffey Jr’s son from injured reserve

Colts have released former Arizona receiver Trey Griffey

Signed as an undrafted free agent from Arizona this past May, the Indianapolis Colts waived wide receiver  Trey Griffey from their injured reserve list on Friday.

The release of a young player of Griffey’s ilk wouldn’t normally be noticeable, especially in July. That’s until we realize that the former Wildcat is the son of MLB Hall of Famer, Ken Griffey Jr.

Indianapolis made noise during the spring by signing the younger Griffey despite seeing him put up a grand total of 79 receptions during his career at Arizona. Whether it was a move directly focused on publicity remains to be seen. Griffey was waived prior to the team’s three-day minicamp last month. On Friday, the two sides reached an injury settlement — freeing the team of a roster spot in the process.

The 6-foot-3 Griffey recorded 23 receptions for 382 yards and two touchdowns last season with Arizona. It was a career that was marred by injuries in and of itself.

His father played 22 seasons in Major League Baseball, racking up 630 homers and 1,836 RBI in the process.
