Colts rookie safety Malik Hooker placed on PUP with hamstring injury

Malik Hooker

The Indianapolis Colts are opening training camp without top draft pick Malik Hooker, who was placed on the PUP list after tweaking his hamstring.

Hooker sat out the team’s entire offseason program after undergoing surgery to repair both his hip and his labrum. So while there’s no reason to panic, per se, about this relatively minor injury, it is a frustrating development.

The Colts selected the Ohio State safety No. 15 overall this past April. He was seen by most draft analysts as the top single-high safety in the draft and possesses excellent ball skills. In two seasons at Ohio State, Hooker played 19 games, tallying 84 tackles, seven interceptions, including three returned for touchdowns last season.

Indy’s defense needs help in the worst way. It ranked No. 27 in the NFL last year, allowing 4,200 yards and 27 touchdowns while hauling in just eight interceptions. Hooker was expected to be a big part of the fix. So he needs to get healthy, and quickly, for that vision to be realized in 2017.
