Colts GM tight-lipped about Andrew Luck availability for start of camp

Andrew Luck

The million-dollar question as to whether Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck will be healthy to start training camp remains unanswered.

This is according to a report by Bob Kravitz of 13 WTHR.

“Wednesday morning, I texted Colts general manager Chris Ballard: ‘As we sit here today, do you expect Andrew to be throwing and ready to roll by the start of camp? Or might it still take time.’

“He answered perfunctorily.

“’We will all discuss on Monday,’ he wrote.”

That is about a tight-lipped as it gets. Luck underwent shoulder surgery on his throwing arm in January. The timeline for recovery was an estimated six months.

Luck was sidelined through all of the Colts preseason practices. This latest news suggests the former 2012 overall 1st pick may still not be ready to participate in training camp, which has been speculated for a while now.

Kravitz provided his personal interpretation of Luck’s status.

“If he’s not ready by Sunday’s first practice, a mild panic will be appropriate. Luck already has missed minicamp and OTA’s, nor has he had time to engage in summertime work with T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief or any of his other receivers. But…it’s his sixth year. We’re not talking about a rookie or a second-year player who doesn’t quite understand the full scope of the playbook. In other words, don’t throw yourself off a bridge. Yet…”

Fortunately, Luck is a seasoned quarterback, as Kravitz points out. He put up three straight playoff campaigns from 2012-14. His best personal performance came in 2014 when he passed for 4,761 yards and 40 touchdowns.

But that was three seasons ago. Luck dealt with multiple injuries in 2015 which limited him to only seven games. In 2016, Luck played in 15 games. Unfortunately between 2015-16, Luck managed 10 wins compared to 12 losses.

The Colts’ first practice is coming up soon enough, and hopefully Luck will be able to participate. Stay tuned here for more news as we await Ballard’s comments next week.
