Chargers on Robert Griffin III workout: ‘We are always looking to upgrade’

Robert Griffin III

The Los Angeles Chargers conducted a workout with free agent quarterback Robert Griffin III on Tuesday. It’s RGIII’s first visit with a team since he was let go by the Cleveland Browns back in March.

While we have no idea whether Los Angeles will sign RGIII to be Philip Rivers’ primary backup, the workout itself seemed to go well.

RGIII was limited to just five games with the Browns last season after suffering a shoulder injury. In that small sample size, the injury-plagued former No. 2 overall pick put up just two touchdowns and three interceptions to go with under 180 yards per game.

A shell of his former self, RGIII has started a grand total of 12 games since the end of the 2013 season. Though, the only real question is here whether he will act as an upgrade over veteran backup Kellen Clemens. Even then, and based off what we’ve seen from RGIII over the years, that could very well be left up for interpretation.

Along with Colin Kaepernick, RGIII remains one of the most-notable free agent quarterbacks on the market with training camps getting going around the NFL.

If nothing else, it looks like the former Baylor standout was somewhat impressive in front of the Chargers’ brass.

What this means moving forward is anyone’s guess.
