After suffering stomach pains Saturday night, Chicago Bears receiver Markus Wheaton underwent successful appendectomy surgery Sunday morning.

Head coach John Fox announced the procedure Sunday. The great news for both Wheaton and the Bears is that his appendix did not rupture prior to the procedure, as noted by Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun Times. There is no known timetable for his recovery.

Wheaton was brought to Chicago this offseason in free agency. He was signed essentially to replace Alshon Jeffery and has been expected to be a go-to weapon for Mike Glennon this season.

In four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Wheaton was productive at times but struggled to stay healthy. He missed all but three games last season with a shoulder injury. In 2015 he had his finest season as a professional, hauling in 44 passes for 749 yards and five touchdowns.
