AFC Scout: Bill Belichick ‘thinks he’s got the next great one’ in Jimmy Garoppolo

Jimmy Garoppolo

With a number of NFL teams needing a quarterback, New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was a persistent name in trade rumors this offseason, but nothing materialized.

One AFC Scout believes he knows why.

“I know teams called about Garoppolo,” the scout said, per Mike Giardi of CSN New England. “I don’t believe they were ever given a realistic price. Why? To me, the answer is simple: Bill thinks he’s got the next great one. I watched his snaps. I think he can be that. [Garoppolo] has a great base, and his mechanics are close enough to [Brady] that you appreciate his willingness to learn and the coaching he’s gotten there.”

New England reportedly had an astronomical asking price. It was reported in March that the Patriots were looking for the No. 1 overall pick from the Browns, who were reportedly interested but not willing to pay that cost.

While Tom Brady is showing no signs of slowing down, Bill Belichick’s M.O. is to always be looking towards the future. Brady is 40. As great as he is, realistically, he can’t have much longer left. So, if Belichick thinks that Garoppolo is the man of the future at the most important position in the game, it only stands to reason that his asking price would be high.

Last year, in six games, two of them starts, Garoppolo went 2-0, completed 68.3 percent of his passes for 502 yards, four touchdowns and zero interceptions.
