Steve Smith faces suspension should he unretire

Steve Smith

Former Carolina Panthers and Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Steve Smith retired from the NFL this past spring. He did so in order to take a job with NFL Network.

And despite the New York Jets showing interest in him recently, it looks like Smith is intent on continuing with the retired life. Though, if Smith himself decides to return to the gridiron, he would face a suspension after skipping multiple drug tests.

“On record right now I have three drug tests I have failed to appear for, and so actually if I tried to reinstate and play, I would be suspended,” Smith said on the Rich Eisen Show (h/t CBS Sports).

Smith made it clear that he’s not on drugs. Instead, he simply decided to skip the tests following his retirement. At that point, the future Hall of Famer had not filed paperwork for retirement with the league. Hence, why he was still subjected to testing.

All of this is seemingly moot. Smith seems intent to continue his media career. However, it surely is something to pay attention to should he decide to unretire.
