St. Louis Cardinals to hold first LGBTQ Pride Night

Cardinals tweet

For the first time in their history, the St. Louis Cardinals will host a Pride Night in 2017. The game will take place on Aug. 25 against the Tampa Bay Rays.

“We are excited to partner with Pride St. Louis to host Pride Night at Busch Stadium,” team president Bill DeWitt III said, via Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “We have hosted many LGBT groups at Busch Stadium over the years, but this is a bigger effort which will remind fans that everyone is welcome at Busch Stadium. The event will also raise money to help courageous students in our community.”

Pride nights are certainly becoming more common around MLB, and professional sports in general.

Still, the Cardinals one is noteworthy for a few incidents.

Tyler Dunnington, a former minor league player in the St. Louis organization, who is gay, left the team after hearing anti-gay comments. More recently, the Cardinals have come under fire for having Lance Berkman as a Christian Day speaker, after inflammatory comments made by the former All-Star.
