Report: Mets open for business on the trade market

Jay Bruce is one of the MLB stars that could be traded in 2017

The New York Mets have been one of MLB’s biggest disappointments in 2017. They enter play on Friday 31-41, 12 games out of first place in the National League East and 14.5 out of the second Wild Card spot.

With little more than a month to go before the non-waiver trade deadline, ESPN’s Buster Olney is reporting that the Mets are “open for business.”

New York certainly has assets. Each of the four players mentioned by Olney will likely generate some interest.

Jay Bruce isn’t a high batting average or OBP guy, but he is a big power bat from the left side. Curtis Granderson isn’t quite the hitter that he used to be, but can still be a valuable contributor in the right spot. Asdrubal Cabrera is a decent hitter who can play either middle infield position. Addison Reed has been one of baseball’s best relief pitchers over the last three seasons.

What’s better is that trading these players wouldn’t necessarily knock the Mets into rebuilding mode. They still have one of baseball’s more-talented starting rotations. Additionally, with players like Yoenis Cespedes and Michael Conforto in the order, New York has a solid offensive foundation.
