Report: Former Cavs GM David Griffin among candidates for Knicks job

David Griffin is leaving the Cavaliers

It was pretty much a foregone conclusion that David Griffin would not be a free agent for too long after the Cleveland Cavaliers decided to move on from him earlier this month.

In Griffin’s three seasons as the Cavaliers’ general manager, his team earned a trip to the NBA Finals each season. Contrary to what Cavs owner Dan Gilbert might believe, Griffin remains a highly respected figure around the Association.

Now comes this report suggesting that Griffin is among the candidates to replace Phil Jackson as the New York Knicks’ president. In fact, he’s expected to be one of the first candidates to interview for the job.

New York parted ways with Jackson earlier this week after a disastrous tenure atop the team’s front office. And while rumors persisted that NBA legend Isiah Thomas might be in line for the job, he took himself out of consideration on Thursday (more on that here).

If Griffin were to indeed land the job in New York, it would be seen as a promotion of sorts. Though, he’d also be working under yet another enigmatic owner in James Dolan.

Either way, this is an extremely interesting development with free agency itself set to get going later in the week.
