Report: Red Sox looking to trade for Pablo Sandoval replacement

Pablo Sandoval has been one of the biggest surprises from MLB spring training this year

The Boston Red Sox are about ready to stick a fork in the failed Pablo Sandoval experiment. According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Red Sox are looking to upgrade the third base position in the trade market.

Boston surged to the top of the American League East this week thanks in part to the Yankees’ lengthy losing streak, but according to a source, the Red Sox are looking to make some major upgrades over the next six weeks, starting first and foremost with the hot corner.”

It makes sense. The Red Sox entered Thursday only one-half game behind the New York Yankees for first place in the American League East and holding the junior circuit’s top Wild Card Spot by 2.5 games. So, Boston is most definitely a contender. With that, it’s hard to be too patient with Pablo Sandoval, who was an unmitigated free agent bust in 2015 and 2016 and has either been injured or ineffective (.212/.269/.354) in 2017.

One potential option would be Rafael Devers, one of the team’s best prospects. But as Nick Cafardo of The Boston Globe reported, the Red Sox do not want to rush him.

The trade market can be tricky, because MLB has so few sellers. Feinsand mentioned both Mike Moustakas of the Kansas City Royals and Todd Frazier of the Chicago White Sox. Both would make some sense, but neither team is completely out of the playoff race at this point.

But the progress of both Kansas City and Chicago will be worth watching before the trade deadline. If they’re out of the mix, both teams will be interesting sellers and the Red Sox are certainly a buyer who will be looking to upgrade.
