Jon “Deuce” Gruden, eldest son of former NFL head coach Jon Gruden, just won gold at the IPF World Classic Powerlifting Championships.

The 23-year-old is coached by his uncle, Jay Gruden, and has a position on Gruden’s Washington Redskins staff as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. He also used to play football (shocking, right?) as a fullback at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa.

“He’s been lifting a long time,” Jon Gruden said last week as his son prepared for the event (h/t Sam Farmar of the Los Angeles Times). “We have a weight room at our house, and I brought home a CD with some of my favorite rock-n-roll songs on there. I used to listen to Bachman Turner Overdrive, Van Halen and AC/DC back when he was in the seventh grade and I could hear the weights over the music. He’s the most self-motivated kid I’ve ever known.”

Gruden said his son has “been focused and determined and has made a ton of sacrifices that nobody knows of.”

All of the sacrifice, motivation and hard work clearly paid off for Deuce, who now has his own tremendous legacy apart from his famous father and uncle.
