Many were surprised when the Kansas City Chiefs released wide receiver Jeremy Maclin on June 2. Among those most shocked was Maclin himself, who found out through a voicemail that he had been let go.

“Through a voicemail,” Maclin said via Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. “[From G.M.] John Dorsey. I was upset, I was shocked. Apparently, they had been trying to trade me for two or three months. Which who knows if that’s true or not? I would just think that . . . a guy who is going into his ninth year would know if he’s being shopped or not. It is what it is. I still have respect for Big Red, still have respect for the organization. I’m not going to bad mouth anybody or talk any dirt on anybody. It was an unfortunate situation.”

Maclin also said that on a scale of one to 10, “eleven” best indicated his shock of the Chiefs’ decision to release him.

The Pro Bowl receiver could certainly have gone off more about his disappointment and poor treatment by the Chiefs. But, he instead kept his comments classy. What terrible way to find out you know longer have a job than through an impersonal voicemail message.

Maclin, a former first-round of the Philadelphia Eagles, signed with the Chiefs in 2015 where he spent two seasons and put up a combined 200 receptions.

Maclin did not remain a free agent long, signing with the Baltimore Ravens just 10 days following his release.

The Ravens signed Maclin to ridiculously reasonable, two-year, $11 million deal. He should be a highly productive asset for quarterback Joe Flacco this season.
