Giants’ John Mara wishes for ‘another dozen players like’ Odell Beckham Jr.

New York Giants co-owner John Mara issued high praise for Odell Beckham Jr. in an interview with Mike Francesa on WFAN Thursday.

“I wish we had another dozen players like him,” Mara said, via Dan Duggan of NJ.com.

We’re betting that extending OBJ a new contract would go a long way towards proving that statement isn’t just hyperbole.

And it seems, based on what Mara had to say next, that he’s referring more specifically to talent and passion than anything else.

“He knows that he’s got to mature and learn to control his emotions better,” Mara said. “He’s working on that. But one thing about that kid is that when he shows up at work, nobody works harder than he does. He’s so competitive, even in practice. He wants to win so badly.”

Nobody can deny Beckham Jr. has the desire to be great. He is constantly working to perfect his craft. But being competitive and talented aren’t the only things players need to become great.

Making smart decisions about what to do with one’s time before a playoff game, for instance, is something Beckham Jr. and some of his other teammates failed to do last year. They infamously went down to South Beach to party it up with Justin Bieber and others before spending a day partying on a yacht, just days before getting blown out of Lambeau Field in the wild card round.

Then after the game, Beckham Jr. infamously created a hole in the wall at Lambeau.

“He’s obviously had some issues trying to control his emotions,” Mara said. “He’s working on that and I think he’s going to be just fine going forward. We’re going to have some ups and downs for sure, but in the long run I’m glad he’s wearing blue.”

No doubt Beckham Jr. has the potential to become an all-time great if he does learn to keep his emotions in check and makes smart decisions. This upcoming season should be exciting for Big Blue, as OBJ and Sterling Shepard are teaming up with Brandon Marshall to form up one of the game’s best offensive trios.
