Former Bills player charged with insurance fraud

Former Buffalo Bills offensive guard Brent Griffith finds himself in some hot water with the law. According to KSTP in Minnesota, Griffith has been charged with insurance fraud over his AFC title ring.

The report indicates that Griffith claimed someone stole his championship ring on a flight back in 2013. He then allegedly made a $5,000 insurance claim on the ring.

Per the report.

“North Star Mutual Insurance Company filed a complaint with the state Commerce Fraud Bureau in July of 2014, after Griffith’s ex-wife, Mary Griffith, called the company to inform them he lied about the ring being stolen and “continued to wear it even though he claimed it had been stolen.”

This is an interesting development considering that Griffith himself was charged back in 2003 for obtaining fraudulent credit cards in the name of then Vikings running back Michael Bennett, who himself is in a heap of legal trouble. At that very same time, Griffith was charged with the theft of 1,500 game tickets from a team official.

Griffith was a seventh-round pick of the Bills back in 1990. He spent just one season with the Bills before returning to Minnesota to become a police officer in Eden Prarie.
