A’s designate All-Star C Stephen Vogt for assignment

THe Oakland Athletics have designated Stephen Vogt for assignment.

The Oakland Athletics shocked pretty much everyone on Thursday by designating two-time All-Star catcher Stephen Vogt for assignment.

The 32-year-old Vogt has struggled to a .217 average with four homers and 20 RBI on the season. Without providing much in terms of defense behind the plate, Vogt’s value has always been as a hitter.

But his regression at the plate led to this move. Despite earning an All-Star appearance last season, the catcher posted a .251 average with a substandard .305 on-base percentage.

Now that the A’s are going through a full rebuild, this is likely the first of many moves between now and July’s trade deadline. Oakland has 10 days to deal Vogt otherwise he will likely be free to sign elsewhere.
