Chiefs part ways with GM John Dorsey

Just minutes after announcing a contract extension for head coach Andy Reid, the Kansas City Chiefs announced general manager John Dorsey was on his way out.

Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt issued the following statement, via the team’s website.

“I notified John that we would not be extending his contract beyond the 2017 season, and after consideration, we felt it was in his best interests and the best interests of the team to part ways now,” Hunt said. “This decision, while a difficult one, allows John to pursue other opportunities as we continue our preparations for the upcoming season and the seasons to come. My family and I sincerely appreciate John’s work over the last four-and-a-half years, and we wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

Dorsey and Reid arrived in Kansas City at the same time and have spent the past four years building the roster together, making the playoffs three times. So to say this move comes as a shock is a bit of an understatement.

A guy who started out as a player for the Green Bay Packers in the 1980s, Dorsey moved into a scouting role with the organization in 1991. He spent more than a decade working his way up the chain in Green Bay before landing the job as Kansas City’s general manager in 2013.

No doubt, he’ll land on his feet after this stunning news. Widely respected around the league for his ability to evaluate talent, he helped the Chiefs assemble a very talented roster the past four years.
