Bulls won’t do buyout on Dwyane Wade contract unless it’s ‘advantageous’ to team

Dwyane Wade may not be interested in returning to the Chicago Bulls in light of the draft-day trade that sent Jimmy Butler to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Some reports indicate he is still planning on opting into his deal, while others suggest he is ready to move on.

Due to make $24 million, one potential option would be for the Bulls to buy out his contract. However, based on comments made by vice president of basketball operations John Paxton, that’s not something the Bulls will do unless it’s beneficial to the team.

What this all means is that, if Wade does want out of Chicago, he’ll need to give back some of the $24 million guaranteed in his contract, per Nick Friedell of ESPN.

Of course, many Bulls fans might be not-so-secretly hoping Wade isn’t on the squad next year. Once one of the Association’s legitimate superstars, he’s clearly on the way down. Last season marked career lows for minutes played per game, field goal percentage, assists and points per game.

At the age of 35, it’s not like Wade is getting any better, either. His knees are worn down, and he was never a fantastic jump shooter. He’ll only continue to regress, meaning he’s really not worth $24 million per year anyway.

The Bulls could potentially buy out the contract of Wade and Rajon Rondo. They might as well. The team that hits the court next season won’t look remotely like the one that made it to the playoffs last year, either way.
