Sadly, this was not unexpected news. In January, it was revealed that Young had an inoperable brain tumor.
Turk Wendell was a teammate of Young with the Chicago Cubs and also spent time with him at Mets training camps. He issued a statement about his friend and teammate, via Kristie Ackert of New York Daily News.
“Anthony was a true gentleman,” Wendell said. “At this year’s fantasy camp, he told us he had a brain tumor. That was Anthony. He never ran away from anything.”
Young had a career record of 15-48 and as Ackert noted, lost 27 consecutive decisions at one point. Despite that, he finished his career with a respectable 3.89 ERA
Young broke into the majors in 1991 with the Mets. He remained with New York through 1993. From 1994-1995, he pitched with the Cubs and finished his career with the Houston Astros in 1996.
