Adrian Peterson targeting five more seasons in the NFL

Adrian Peterson

Adrian Peterson isn’t your average NFL running back at the age of 32. This is something New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton noticed right away. He’s a solid slab of granite come to life, blessed with physical abilities most of us couldn’t even dream of possessing.

Though he’s coming off a lost season due to injury (knee), Peterson envisions playing in the NFL until he’s 37 years old. He said 37 is “a good number,” meaning, he wants to play five more seasons.

“I’d be lying to you say it doesn’t give you a chip [on your shoulder]. Especially being a competitor,” Peterson said, via the New Orleans Advocate. “It’s not my main focus. It’s something that drives you a little bit. After 30, because it was the same back then. ‘Oh, he’s 30.’ Then I ended up leading the league in 2015. Same thing the next year. Stuff will continue to repeat itself until I finish.”

Much like Drew Brees saying he wants to play until he’s 45 or Tom Brady expressing similar sentiments, this sounds better in theory than in practice.

The hard, cold reality is that NFL players break down. Even the iron men like Peterson. It’s hard to envision him being able to stay healthy enough to play five more seasons. If anything, he’s going to be very fortunate if he has two more good, productive years left in his body.

But five more it’s a pretty awesome goal.
