Report: Lions sign former Vikings RB Matt Asiata

When the Minnesota Vikings signed Pro Bowl running back Latavius Murray back in March, it was readily apparent the team was seeking an upgrade from its dead last rushing attack in 2016.

That was only magnified further then Minnesota selected former Florida State running back Dalvin Cook in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

With no room for him in Minnesota, veteran running back Matt Asiata has reportedly agreed to a contract with the division-rival Detroit Lions. Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press was the first to report the news, indicating that it is a one-year deal.

Asiata, a former undrafted free agent from Utah back in 2012, split time with Jerick McKinnon as the Vikings’ lead back last season. He tallied 665 total yards and six rushing touchdowns while averaging a pedestrian 3.3 yards per rush.

The expectation here has to be that Asiata will act as depth behind Ameer Abdullah for the Lions in 2017. He should be nothing more than a short-yardage back.
