Report: All-Star Paul Millsap opts out of contract with Hawks to become free agent

Paul MIllsap is opting out of his contract to become a free agent

All-Star power forward Paul Millsap has opted out of his contract with the Atlanta Hawks to become a free agent heading into the 2017-18 NBA season, per Shams Charania of The Vertical.

This doesn’t mean Millsap won’t be back with the Hawks, however: “Atlanta has publicly stated that Millsap will be a top priority in July free agency, and Millsap has expressed interest in re-signing,” writes Charania.

If Millsap had not opted out, he was on track to earn $21.4 million next season. However, given the rising salary cap he stands to earn much more on a new contract.

During the regular season, Millsap averaged 18.1 points and 7.7 rebounds, earning his fourth career All-Star appearance. During Atlanta’s first-round loss to the Washington Wizards, Millsap was the team’s best player, averaging 24.3 points, 9.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists.

Atlanta will need to be aggressive if it hopes to bring Millsap back. He’s one of the top players that will be available this summer, and he could receive some major interest around the Association.
