The Oakland Athletics and professional baseball in general were dealt a tragic blow on Tuesday. It was announced that minor leaguer Casey Thomas passed away suddenly and unexpectedly.

“We were devastated to hear of this tragedy within the A’s family,” said Oakland’s executive vice president of baseball operations via 95.7 The Game. “Our hearts go out to Tom and his family on their loss; Casey was a wonderful young man and teammate, and will be missed by all in the A’s organization.”

Thomas was taking part in extended spring training in Arizona.  His father, Tom Thomas, is a Pro Scout for the organization.

Thomas was selected in the 34th round of the 2016 draft by the Athletics. He participated in the Arizona Fall League, hitting .258 while driving in 18 runs in 120 at-bats. He also stole three bases. In the field, Thomas played different infield positions, but played predominantly at short stop in the AFL.

At this time, no additional details are known about his death.
