New York Knicks forward Carmelo Anthony and his wife La La have split up, per TMZ.
“We’re told the couple’s had ups and downs in the past, but the current NBA season has been extremely stressful on the marriage for several months. Carmelo’s been plagued by trade talks … with the Knicks looking to move him to another team.
“Our sources say the split is still amicable. They were together just this past weekend at their 10-year-old son Kiyan’s basketball game.
“We’re told La La and Carmelo have NO plans to uproot [their son] Kiyan from his friends and school in NY,” states the report, via TMZ.
For a long time, La La has been viewed as one of the bigger obstacles in a potential Carmelo trade. Many have speculated that her fashion line and lifestyle wishes are one of the biggest reasons Anthony would not waive his no-trade clause. Needless to say, that could change if the two are split up and it couldn’t have come at a more opportune time in terms of a potential trade.
After Phil Jackson said that Anthony would be “better off somewhere else,” during his press conference last week, a trade was already closer than ever. Though this separation is still “amicable,” and there are no plans to move their son away from New York, this is yet another potential step toward that end.
