Jason Kidd: Giannis Antetokounmpo ‘better than I am’

NBA Playoffs, Giannis Antetokounmpo

Milwaukee Bucks head coach Jason Kidd has the distinction of being one of the NBA’s best all-time point guards. So anything he says about guard Giannis Antetokounmpo, a rising star, carries some weight.

At 6-foot-11 with the wingspan of an albatross, he can do things Kidd never dreamed of, which is probably why his head coach said the following.

“I wish I was 7 feet tall,” Kidd said, per the Associated Press. “He’s better than I am.”

Antetokounmpo has been a veritable nightmare to defend so far during the playoffs, and his defensive prowess makes him one of the best two-way guards in basketball. Through three games, he’s averaging 23.7 points, 10.3 rebounds, 4,7 assists, two steals and one block per game.

And the scary part here is that he’s just now starting to get into the nuances of the game. He has so much room to grow that the ceiling for him is practically unmeasurable.

“He wants to learn. He wants to be a point guard,” Kidd said. “He wants to have the ball and help make decisions, be involved in the play.”

Eastern Conference guards must feel at least a little bit of fear reading those words.

The Greek Freak is still just 22 years old and is quickly becoming one of the game’s biggest stars. With the ability to pull off magical feats on the court (like this) on a regular basis, he’s a new breed of player — perhaps the modern equivalent of Magic Johnson, with infinitely more natural athleticism and explosion packed into his freakishly amazing frame.

We cannot wait to see how this kid develops in the coming years. With Kidd as the master and Antetokounmpo as the pupil, it’s going to be must-see entertainment.
